Hitachi Rail has unveiled ‘Enhanced by HMAX’, a digital asset management platform expansion that covers the company’s entire portfolio, including infrastructure, signaling, operations, and rolling stock. This initiative represents a major move toward integrating sophisticated AI and data analytics into the foundation of global railway operations.

As part of this rollout, Hitachi Rail has pledged that all new rolling stock will feature proprietary HMAX sensor technology starting in 2027, including flagship models like the ETR1000 high-speed train. These sensors collect real-time data from vital systems, allowing operators to track performance, detect emerging issues, and refine maintenance and operational strategies throughout the asset’s lifecycle.

development of autonomous tram programs. These systems integrate next-generation autonomous positioning (NGAP)—which achieves track location accuracy within one meter—with obstacle detection, classification, and tracking (ODT) via a sensor fusion algorithm that utilizes radar, IMU, LiDAR, GNSS, and stereo cameras.

The AI models driving these functions were developed using simulated railway data, leveraging NVIDIA’s open Cosmos world model and NVIDIA Metropolis Blueprint for video search and summarization (VSS) to deploy context-aware vision AI agents. Furthermore, NVIDIA Omniverse libraries allow the team to train against a wide variety of scenarios, including mission-critical, rare, or safety-related events, without the need for years of live operational data.

The benefits of this approach are substantial, including decreased reliance on ground-based infrastructure, lower maintenance and installation costs, improved energy efficiency through optimized speed profiles, and increased passenger capacity.

Enhanced by HMAX case study:HMAX Catenary Monitoring – From 10 Days to Real Time

HMAX also powers Hitachi Rail’s solutions for physical infrastructure. For instance, HMAX catenary monitoring utilizes onboard computing to process overhead line equipment data from cameras mounted on in-service trains. Previously, manual data extraction and cloud processing meant that analyzing a single day of footage could take up to 10 days. With NVIDIA IGX Thor deployed via HMAX, data is now analyzed in real time at the edge, with only potential faults flagged for review. This real-time monitoring allows Hitachi Rail’s customers to make more impactful corrective decisions while minimizing service disruptions.

What are the benefits of HMAX for Rail?
HMAX helps to reduce total cost of ownership by extending asset life and minimizing unnecessary maintenance. Approximately 50% of railway costs are attributed to maintenance and energy, and HMAX is designed to optimize these areas. In real-world deployments, the platform has reduced some customers’ maintenance costs by 15% and energy consumption by 15%.
